Weight Loss Maintenance on Ad Libitum Diets with High or Low Protein Content and Glycemic Index

2014International Journal of ObesityModerate evidence

Design

Twelve-month randomized dietary maintenance trial extension

Evidence chain

Population

256 adults with overweight or obesity after an eight-week low-calorie diet.

Intervention and comparator

High- or low-protein ad libitum diets, crossed with glycemic-index assignments and a control group.

Endpoint

Body-weight change during 12 months of maintenance.

Reported result

High-protein groups regained 2.0 kg less than low-protein groups in completers and 2.8 kg less in the intention-to-treat analysis.

Leptox interpretation

Supports a maintenance benefit in this post-weight-loss setting; it does not define a universal high-protein prescription.
